Kelso State School is situated near Ross River Dam on the lands of the Wulgurukaba and Bindal peoples. The suburb is named for the couple Agnes and James Kelso who had large land holdings in the area from 1878. The land was used for farming and cattle grazing until in 1968 when a housing development was established at Condon.
The population in the Kelso area increased until it was decided that a school was needed for the suburb of Kelso. Construction began in 1985 and on the 28 January 1986, Kelso State School opened for classes.
Today Kelso State School is a well resourced school with a modern library, science lab, computer lab and multipurpose hall. The spacious grounds are well maintained with shaded areas, trees and play equipment for all year levels
