Author/Illustrator Peter Carnavas Wows Kelso

Peter Carnavas reads a book

What a motivating day for our Preps and Year 4s! The wonderful Peter Carnavas, illustrator and author, visited Kelso State School today and inspired our students about writing and illustrating stories. Shan Boller, from CityLibraries Townsville, brought him to visit as part of the Preps at the Library program, which is sponsored, by Darren and Tracy McKenna.
Each of our three Prep classes and two Year 4 classes participated in an exciting workshop about writing and illustrating with Peter. In each engaging session, he told us the five secrets of books and explained what an illustrator’s job is like (a lot of drawing!). He showed us how easy it is to get ideas for writing and we learned that we all have great ideas.

Some of our students did not think that they could draw but Peter explained that if you could draw a line a circle and a dot, you could draw anything and then taught us how to draw bears, whales, and anglerfish. Peter even demonstrated to the Year 4s how he could draw a horse in 15 seconds. Some of the illustrations from today’s session will be on display in the school Library next week. During question time, judging by some of the questions asked, some of our students might be considering a future career as an author or illustrator.

Before he left, Peter kindly signed three picture books for us. They will go into our collection for borrowing next week and are certain to be very popular.
